Listen Up You non-GeeksNov 20, 2009 PROBLEM:
I can't access my neighbor's wireless connection via the built in wireless on my Dell (Vista Home Premium) laptop and Asus (Linux version) netbook. I'm about 500 feet away.
SOLUTION:
Install the ALPHA AWUSO36H Long Range Adapter. You won't need the extra long range antenna...it made no difference in my case.
BUT:
You really should get permission to skerk off another's internet connection. My neighbor is a friend, so I give him a case of beer each month.
AND:
There are now 3 more connections I COULD access from other neighbors.
FUTHERMORE:
Saves me about $30 per month including the beer.
Effortless installation. If you go to the web site to download the newer driver it will give you a smidge more reception, like one bar on the Vista scale.

This WiFi adapter solved my problemNov 17, 2009 I thought I'd try this adapter based on all the positive reviews. In my case, it absolutely works as good as the other positive reviews state. My city has free WiFi available. From my office, my WiFi enabled laptop doesn't even show that the free network is there. Not even when I tried it from the window sill. My final solution was the ALFA AWUS036H USB adapter on two 16' Tripp Lite active USB cables and a 13dBi Panel Antenna w/ RP-SMA connectors from Data Alliance, also found on Amazon.com. I just have the small panel antenna sitting on the sill picking up reflections from the building across the street. I get 5 bars with a link quality of 85%. It works great!

Pretty good...not great and only if you are already in rangeNov 16, 2009 After reading extensive reviews, I think I got my hopes up a little too high on this device. I received it, had a little trouble with installation, but got it up and going. I was expecting to have at least a 1 mile radius, but that is definitely not the case. There is a coffee shop with free wifi almost exactly two blocks down the street (quarter mile I would say), and this little guys still does not pick up the signal.
I use my neighbors wifi (with their permission) a few doors down. Before I got this device, I was getting about 12-18 mbps with a "very low" rating. On the front porch, I could get about 24 mbps with a "low" rating. Now, with this guy, I get 11 mbps CONSISTENTLY anywhere in the house with a "very good" rating. Also, it doesn't go in and out like before. So, while the mbps hasn't changed at all really, the quality and consistency of my connection is much better.
I'm also getting connected to a restaurant which is just across the street from my neighbors house now- about half a block and across a street from my house. The connection to that network is also "very good" but I'm only getting about 5.5 mbps. When I'm in the restaurant, I get 54 mpbs.
So, all in all, definitely worth the price if you already have something in range, or know of something within a block or so. It will strengthen a weak connection quite well, but I wouldn't expect to be picking up signals all over the place. Also, my roommate could never even get a weak connection in the house, now he is also connected as well as I am. So, even if you're not picking up a signal yet, if you know one is close by, this still might be worth the buy.
Oh, and yes, that giant antennae is completely useless...which is kind of nice actually because it would be annoying trying to lug it around. For some reason, the smaller/normal antennae actually works better. Everything I addressed in this review was with the smaller antennae- the larger one couldn't connect to a network that my INTERNAL wifi could! So...skip that if you can...I think the 500 version is probably the same thing without the large antennae and costs a few bucks less.

Poor sensitivity, does not work in high interference environmentNov 15, 2009 Another example of "you get what you pay for." This thing is exactly what you'd expect from an affordable, high power wireless adapter; junk. The Intel 5100AGN card in my laptop easily out performs this adapter. My router reports a SNR of -71 with my laptops adapter, and -57 with this adapter, which is a great improvement, so that indicates the power output of this thing is functioning. the problem comes in when you are talking about sensitivity. This thing does an absolutely awful job of RECEIVING signal. Considering most traffic through your wireless is going to be you downloading, this will be a serious issue. My built in card can see 16 wireless networks. This thing can only see 4. If you currently get bad signal with your wireless, and think this will help, do yourself a favor and follow my advice: DON'T BUY THIS! Sensitivity is key, and this has none.

Works as AdvertisedNov 15, 2009 This device works pretty much as described. I can now easily connect to signals I couldn't even detect before. Be advised, however, that the large antenna (which is the super-effective one) is 14" long, and much bulkier than it looks on the web page. I've only used it lightly, but when you really need it there simply is no substitute. With XP, I can use either this device or my netbook's built-in wireless at will. I _suspect_ this is a battery-drainer, but can't prove it. If so, is still well worth it.
