What a differenceMar 07, 2010
I am using this in a RV Park with two Wifi Antenna. The one was so weak I could never connect to it. The other connection was OK but they are having big problems wth it. It was not available about as much as it was useable. I received the Alfa, set it up and JOY, I have a great connection on the formally weaker antenna. I am very pleased with the Alfa.

I was looking to increase the wifi range of my laptop while on vacation in my travel trailer because many campgrounds have marginal wifi systems. The 1 watt Alfa looked like the perfect solution because of its power and size. The one thing I wanted to avoid was to have any length of antenna cable since the a foot or two of the super mini cable will eat up over half the signal. I placed the alfa inside two 3" to 1 1/2" pvc reducer couplers (end on end)and used stirofoam on the top and bottom of the Alfa for cushioning,tight fit, and to allow heat dissipation. The top had reducers down to 1/2" thin gauge water pipe which was a nice tight fit for the 9" antenna, the bottom half was reduced to 1" for mounting. The antenna and Alfa will be mounted on top of the travel trailers ladder. I did a side by side test with my laptop with good results outside my house. The laptop received 4 stations and the Alfa creation received 14 stations. If you are in a Comcast area you will find that you will connect with open systems but will not usually be able to access the internet through them. I had to jump through many hoops to access the internet (not the wireless router) before activating my wifi security with Comcast.
For my use the 9" antenna was ideal but if you plan to place the Alfa and antenna on a table it will tip over. The 5 inch antenna works good and is much more stable and usable. Remember its better to remote the Alfa than remoting the antenna unless you use 1/2" antenna cable. PS. The Alfa stands on end within the pvc with the 9" antenna pointing straight up into the pipe. A small piece of 3" pipe allowed both 3" halves to join together. The bottom halve was cemented and the top was not. The top halve is secured by its tight fit and a couple of screws. This allows the case to be opened and the Alfa to be replaced if needed.

An almost perfect usb wifi card...Feb 06, 2010
This is by far the best usb wifi device I have ever tried, and I have used allot of them. I work in a computer store and have had the opportunity to try many different brands and devices. This one beats just about all of them. I am able to pull in and connect to nearby access points I never could before and with a totally stable connection. (no dropping in and out) This is with the standard short antenna. The bigger "9 DBI" antenna is just about useless. The signal strength is actually lower with the 9 dbi antenna then with the standard one and I had a hard time connecting to any access point with it. Even the one in my house had a much weaker signal. The others in the neighborhood that I was able to connect to with the short antenna I couldn't connect to at all with the larger antenna. This is why I gave the Alfa only 4 stars, if the 9dbi had worked it would have been 5. The window mount is also pretty handy, you can stick it right to the back of your laptops screen or if need be a nearby window or other surface to get a better signal. If the 9dbi antenna worked it would be the perfect device. If you have a need for an usb wifi card the Alfa 1000mw is the one to get, but save you money and buy one of the kits without the larger antenna.
