5Very pleasedMar 03, 2010
I was not able to pick up a WI FI signal until I purchased this product. My previous adapter was far inferior. The product was simple to install and has worked without a problem.

5AlfaMar 02, 2010
purchased the alfa to use with my usb modem.......as a wireless router. It works great inside the house!

5Better RangeFeb 28, 2010
It made my reception increase by 60-70% over my internal laptop card. Works perfectly in Ubuntu for all purposes, as other reviewers have stated. The included holster and suction cup allowed me to attach it to the back of my monitor. Overall satisfied so far.

4Very good but documentation is poorFeb 20, 2010
I have a Linksys WRT54 wireless router that covers the house with good signal strength, but operating a wireless computer in our detached garage is a problem. I tried an early version of the Linksys WUSB compact wireless G adapter series; that worked but it was poor at best. So I upgraded to a supped-up (higher priced) version of the same Linksys series, if there was any improvement it was difficult to detect. All of the Linksys WUSB's could detect my router plus a couple of others in the neighborhood but signal levels were poor, one and rarely two bars. I put a lot of time into improving things and signal levels went up but still were at best poor. Then I ran across the ALFA usb 500mW on Amazon, and read the encouraging reviews, so I ordered one. This thing works and in a place where Linksys WUSB54 series just didn't cut it. With it my garage computer could see five more neighborhood wireless sites, and with enough signal strength to be useful. This adapter looked to be a winner, but there is a hitch in its get-a-long!!! I only know enough about wireless networks to get them to work with some guidance from some well worded instructions and easy to use software. ALFA `s setup instructions are in my opinion very poor. The softwear (Realtek ?) and the set-up utility might be good for those that can speak the wireless techie language; I don't and was overwhelmed by all the whistles, bells and selections involved in the setup. I was forced into the "by guess and by golly" trial mode and through dumb luck or the grace of The Almighty eventually got the thing to work. When it finally started to work I didn't have a clue what I had done or how to do it again. I won't be tweaking this set-up and hope I'll never have reason to touch it again. If the hardware had been defective I wouldn't have been able to diagnose it; I would still be out there beating my head against the wall. Even though this adapter is decidedly superior to the three Linksys WUSB series adapters I would not recommend it to anyone with my level of wireless experience that is not willing to spend time fiddle with it until it works. If you are new to wireless set-up, find experienced help or forget this one.
When it comes to computer networking and wireless connections I am a neophyte and learned from this experience. (1) Before starting any installation involving OEM drivers and/or software set a new Widows restore point so you can back out of mistakes with minimum of fuss. (2) The ALFA set-up is like the Linksys WUSB adapters DO NOT connect the adapter before loading the software. Put the CD in the drive and read everything in the set-up instructions carefully.
Some say you can load the drivers and forget the ALFA softwear by using the Windows wireless utility to set up connections. That may be a good (or even the best) way to go but those folks know a lot more about this subject than I do, that not a beginner level set-up. Considering the price this is (in my opinion) a very good product but it is not user friendly for those of us that are not interested in spending a lot of time learning the technology.

4Great Buy!Feb 20, 2010
I think I had my expectations a little bit too high after reading the product description, but I'm still not disappointed with the purchase. I've only had it a couple days now. I had a little trouble after installing the driver (XP)..My desktop started looking really buggy - it looked as if it was trying to revert to the Win98 theme?? After that, I uninstalled it, along with drivers for my last linksys adapter(which may have been the problem). I re-booted and re-installed the driver for the Alfa, and everything seems ok so far. I definitely see signal strength increases on all of the networks in my area (mostly full bars where there used to be 1-3). I have noticed on a couple, that the speed will not go above 11mbps (on G networks). I see one network that I did not before, with a weak signal..I haven't tried moving the adapter around too much yet though. This adapter outperforms my previous usb adapters (Linksys WUSB600N) which cost around $70, and another Linksys (WUSB300N) that I paid about $60 for! I definitely recommend this product, especially for the unbeatable price!
